چکیده

In article number 2004717, Seok Woo Lee and co-workers present an efficient low-grade heat-harvesting system with a Carnot efficiency as high 50%. By tuning the hydration entropy during electrochemical reaction, temperature coefficient reaches value in thermally regenerative cycle. Moreover, harvesting of thermal energy various ranges, from 10 °C to 50 °C, is demonstrated for practical applications.

An electrochemical system for efficiently harvesting low-grade heat energy.

Efficient and low-cost thermal energy-harvesting systems are needed to utilize the tremendous low-grade heat sources. Although thermoelectric devices are attractive, its efficiency is limited by the relatively low figure-of-merit and low-temperature differential. An alternative approach is to explore thermodynamic cycles. Thermogalvanic effect, the dependence of electrode potential on temperatu...

Entropy Harvesting

The paper introduces the notion of “entropy harvesting” in physical and biological systems. Various physical and natural systems demonstrate the ability to decrease entropy under external stimuli. These systems, including stretched synthetic polymers, muscles, osmotic membranes and suspensions containing small hydrophobic particles, are called “entropic harvesters”. Entropic force acting in the...

Thermally enhanced photoluminescence for heat harvesting in photovoltaics

The maximal Shockley-Queisser efficiency limit of 41% for single-junction photovoltaics is primarily caused by heat dissipation following energetic-photon absorption. Solar-thermophotovoltaics concepts attempt to harvest this heat loss, but the required high temperatures (T>2,000 K) hinder device realization. Conversely, we have recently demonstrated how thermally enhanced photoluminescence is ...

RFID Enabled Supply-chain: Harvesting the Opportunities

Implementation of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology stands to save WalMart $750 million dollars per year. The retail giant has mandated that its top 100 suppliers begin using RFID by 2005. It is believed that other retailers will follow Wal-Mart’s lead. RFID holds the promise for a more efficient supply-chain, however, the industry struggles to comply with the cost and logistics ...

Heat stress induces an aggregation of the light-harvesting complex of photosystem II in spinach plants.

Whole spinach (Spinacia oleracea) plants were subjected to heat stress (25 degrees C-50 degrees C) in the dark for 30 min. At temperatures higher than 35 degrees C, CO2 assimilation rate decreased significantly. The maximal efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry remained unchanged until 45 degrees C and decreased only slightly at 50 degrees C. Nonphotochemical quenching increased si...
